Set up cooking, eating and supply area at least 100 yards from your sleeping area. Store food and odorous items by hanging at least 10 to 15 feet above ground and 4 feet from top and side supports or store in approved, bear resistant containers.

Select food in individually sealed packages. Plan meals carefully to prevent leftovers.

Store pet food, livestock feed and garbage the same as food. Never bury it; pack it out.

Strain food particles from dishwater using a fine mesh screen and store with garbage. Dump dishwater at least 100 yards from your sleeping area. Food odors may attract bears and other animals.

Keep sleeping bags and tents completely free of food, food odors and beverages.

Store personal items (such as deodorants, toothpaste, soap and lotions) with food and garbage when not in use. Any odorous product may attract bears.

Camp in open areas away from trails, thick brush, berry patches, spawning streams or carcasses. Sleep in a tent for increased safety.

Keep a flashlight and bear spray readily available.

Wash your hands after cooking, eating or handling fish or game. Minimize odors.

World Animal day has been recognized every October 4th since 1931! World Animal Day (WAD) is a world-wide event so there is likely to be an event near you! Check your local zoo (National Geographic and zoos across the United States and Canada are working together to celebrate World Animal Day). Check the event calendar on the official World Animal Day website. No matter how you do it, if you care about the animals of this planet, find some way to get involved, to create awareness or to just plain have a good time.

Now, I’d like to draw attention to the Endangered Red Panda. Look at that face…

There are fewer than 2,500 adult red pandas.

Red pandas live in the cool temperate bamboo forests in Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces in China, in the Himalayas, and in Myanmar. They share part of their range with giant pandas.

I was wondering around google doing a little research when I discovered, google is a jerk:

The declination of the Sun on the Summer Solstice is known as the tropic of cancer (23° 27′). In the southern hemisphere, winter and summer solstices are exchanged so that the Summer Solstice is the day on which the Sun is farthest south. ”

A common misconception is that the earth is further from the sun in winter than in summer. Actually, the Earth is closest to the sun in December which is winter in the Northern hemisphere.

As the Earth travels around the Sun in its orbit, the north-south position of the Sun changes over the course of the year because of the changing orientation of the Earth’s tilted rotation axes. The dates of maximum tilt of the Earth’s equator correspond to the Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice, and the dates of zero tilt to the Vernal Equinox and Autumnal Equinox.

I am guessing by the description in the article he plays a rogue, he taunted and then feigned death…so WIN! I hope he gets a guild promotion for having crazy RL skillz.

Hans Jørgen Olsen, a 12-year-old Norwegian boy, saved himself and his sister from a moose attack using skills he picked up playing the online role playing game World of Warcraft.

Hans and his sister got into trouble after they had trespassed the territory of the moose during a walk in the forest near their home. When the moose attacked them, Hans knew the first thing he had to do was ‘taunt’ and provoke the animal so that it would leave his sister alone and she could run to safety. ‘Taunting’ is a move one uses in World of Warcraft to get monsters off of the less-well-armored team members.

Once Hans was a target, he remembered another skill he had picked up at level 30 in ‘World of Warcraft’ – he feigned death. The moose lost interest in the inanimate boy and wandered off into the woods. When he was safely alone Hans ran back home to share his tale of video game-inspired survival.
